International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination


On 21 March 1960, in the township of Sharpeville, South Africa, police opened fire and killed 69 people who were peacefully demonstrating against apartheid's "pass laws." The United Nations General Assembly subsequently declared that day, 21 March, the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, and called on the international community not only to commemorate that tragedy, but also to work together to combat racism and discrimination wherever they exist.

United Nations Association of Bulgaria

United Nations Association of Bulgaria is a national NGO, established in 1948 in order to assist the process of Bulgarian membership into UN which becomes a fact in 1955. UNA-BG is a member of the global family of the World Federation of United Nations Associations (WFUNA) – the civil support of the UN. The members of the Association are usually diplomats, university professors and students.
The mission of UNA-BG is to attract the support of the Bulgarian society for the United Nations and for the international peaceful co-existence and respect to the main human rights and freedoms. The Association promotes and applies the UN ideas, principles and decisions in Bulgaria.
UNA develops alternative methods for civic education in the spirit of UN. It has a national network of over 30 UN school clubs.

The Youth Organisation of UNA of Bulgaria

The Youth Organisation of UNA of Bulgaria was established in 2003 to coordinate the youth-related activities. Its strategic aims are to raise the civil awareness of Bulgarian youth and to contribute to the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals in Bulgaria.
The main programs conducted by UNA-BG are:
• Model UN simulations;
• "Peer 2 Peer" education programs in human rights;
• Publishing of research works about UN and toolkits for informal education.
Since 2003 UNA is a national coordinator for the region of Eastern Europe in the framework of the Global Partnership Programme for Prevention of Armed Conflict (GPPAC). Another recent priority set by the Youth Organisation is to develop projects using sport for achievement of development and peace.
