4x4
Video and installations by Ivan Mudov
4x4 is an exhibition where Ivan Mudov shows four of his works
for the first time in Bulgaria. Some of them were completed
more than a year ago during his specialisation in Lyon, others
are made specially for this exhibition. Vital and reflexive,
ever-searching, Ivan Mudov is one of the young artists that
shape the face of the contemporary Bulgarian art. Like the
4x4 system with the automobiles, thanks which every wheel
copes separately with the obstacles and allows for greater
versatility, each of the four works of the exhibition makes
its own impact, thoroughly different, but at the same time
in dialog with the others. As a result the exhibition has
an increased power.
The large space of the Red Hall is taken by the video and
sound installation “Festival des Liberdes”. The tranquillity
of the bourgeois Lyon, caught in the frame, falls into dramatic
inconsistency with the grumble of a demonstration coming from
out of the frame. The attempt to go beyond the space of the
image takes the spectator into the Nameless hall, with the
screening of “Kill Kennedy, Fuck Monroe”. The painful, helpless
sound from the touch with the photos of the 20th century idols
proves once again that intimacy is impossible. In “The Matrix”
-- two-channel video installation the author shows the much
known film through the stories of his friends and so the film
surprisingly changes. The fourth work is part of “Fragments”,
installation in progress. The beginning of this year was the
first time when part of it was shown in Bulgaria - at ATA
Centre / Institute for Contemporary Art. On the prints in
Gulliver hall the author has stamped moments from the “pilfering”
of parts of museum exhibits. The installation, questioning
the idea of museum and the value of a piece of art put in
different contexts, naturally passes to the next hall. There,
provoked by the specific museum suggestion of the Andrey Nikolov’s
permanent sculpture exhibition, Ivan Mudov transfers parts
of another, contemporary, art. Under the glass settings one
can see fragments of works of ten world-renowned conceptual
artists. This unusual exhibition will be complemented by photos
of the original work, as well as texts for the authors.
Ivan Mudov is born in 1975. He graduates from the National
Academy of Arts in 2002 and has accumulated an impressive
creative biography. He has taken part in Manifesta 4, The
Moscow Biennale, The 4th and 5th Cetine Biennale. His works
were shown in Casino Luxembourg, Institute for Contemporary
Art, Berlin, Museum of Modern Art, Strasbourg, Kunsthalle
Fridericianum Kassel and ESSEL collection in Vienna. He works
in the field of video, photography, installation and performance.
