spanking: portrait 1
Idea and performance - Teodor Kotov; Staging - Juliana Sajska;
Composer - Emilian Getzov-Elbi; Visual surrounding - Ivan
Nikolov; Consultant stage design - Ivaylo Mitev
More information about the performance:
A performance about the solitude, violence and the pleasure
it creates. The topic of “Spanking: portrait 1” performance
is sexual violence and post-traumatic effects on the persons`
identification. The performer has started meeting a therapist
who was helping him to get aware with some inner impulses
and fixed strategies. Passing on through some ever memorable
scenes of his childhood he has discovered the inside of that
little unknown child of him. Collecting images from the performer’s
past and remembering strong feelings from his childhood, he
started to integrate these inner movements with words and
gestures. The performance reminds a therapeutic session where
the violated body doesn’t need any sympathy or compassion.
It doesn’t ask any absolution. As object and subject it ascertains
the fact of violence. A non-sentimental, brutal and compulsive.
Desire vs. Suffering; Excitation vs. Violence; Sex vs. Fear.
All this expressions appears in the performer’s body as traumatized
body – dark, beheaded silhouette, shrunk in his thoughts,
with head wedge in between shoulders, with a face in horrifying
grimace. Heavily breathing body, choke up in passion, in desire,
in dread, in disgust…Accepting himself that violated body
turns in to a fetish – almost nude, sweating, faceless and
masked. It tells his story ruthlessness, spanking, self-admiring,
self-humiliating…A body of delight and insult. Although the
problem is painful the performance move the audience aside
from the gloomy and shocking facts by exaggerating the brutal
naturalism. The character – interpreter of self experience,
rivet the attention with super-concentrated physical actions,
aesthetic, sadomasochistic revelations in which the self-abuse,
guilt and self-humiliation lead to the unattainable end of
the human unconsciousness.
