Mario Bessa
Mario Bessa, born in 73, studies Art History
in the University of Porto. He has the course of Artes e
Tecnicas do Espectaculo of Academia Contemporanea do Espectaculo
(Arts and Techniques of Performance of the Contemporary
Academy of Performance) and the course of Communication,
Marketing, Public Relations and Publicity of the Bento de
Jesus Caraca Professional School.
He had formation with top Portuguese and foreigner teachers:
in Lighting Design: Robert Ornbo (president of the Association
of lighting Designers, A.L.D.), jorge Ribeiro and Victor
Correia; in Sound, Machinery and Stage Management: Alain
Girot, Adrian Dow and Ines Vicente; in Video and Projections:
Solon Papadopoulos and Antonio Gorgal; and with the Directors:
Friches - Theatre Urbain, Antonio Capelo, Joao Paulo Costa,
Jerzy Kelesyk, among others.
He did working experience twice in Corbeil Essones Municipal
Theater (Paris) and in England, where he worked with Robert
Ornbo and David Hersey, among many others; in theaters such
as the Royal National Theatre of London, the Grand Theatre
of Blackpool, the Derngate (Northampton), the Theatre Royal
of Bath…; in Shows as " Oklahoma " Directed by
Trevor Nunn or " The Royal Tournament ", a military
Tattoo done for the celebration of the Queen of England’s
birthday.
He signed more than fifty Lighting Designs for Shows subsidized
by the Portuguese ministry of culture in Theater, Dance,
New Circus or Opera; with the Directors: Rogerio de Carvalho,
Joao Paulo Costa, Nuno Carinhas, Antonio Capelo, Andre Riot
Sarcey, Joao Garcia Miguel, Fernanda Lapa, Joana Providencia,
among others; with the companies: “Teatro Bruto”, “As Boas
Raparigas…”, “Teatro Plastico”, “Ensemble – Sociedade de
Actores, “Nucleo de Experimentacao Coreografica”, “Meta-Mortem-Fase”,
“Orquestra do Norte”...; in Theaters such as Coliseu dos
Recreios, Coliseu do Porto, Rivoli Teatro Municipal, TECA,
Centro Cultural de Belem., Teatro Nacional Sao Joao…
As Educational, he was Director of the Course Artes e Tecnicas
do Espectaculo da Academia Contemporanea do Espectaculo
and Teacher of the classes of Lighting Design and Theatrical
Theory and Practice. He has been collaborating with the
Escola Superior de Musica e Artes do Espectaculo (ESMAE)
in the last production of their Theatre Course.
As Technician, he worked for Ponti – International Theatre
Festival of Porto and for Porto2001 – European Capital of
Culture. He was responsible for the Lighting department
of the Campo Alegre Theatre, he was Technical Director of
"As Boas Raparigas…", of Academia Contemporanea
do Espectaculo and he did the Technical Direction of most
of its Shows and subsequent Tours.
