Nationalization
of Languages: Literary Debate in Europe in the 1930's
lecture by
Philippe Roussin
This lecture is aiming at encoding the preconditions
and the essence of the arguments about the opposition of written
against spoken language, science against vernacular language,
living against dead language, which are at the hub of numerous
debates that cross the literature fields in France, Europe
and the USA during the 1930's (George Orwell, Carlo E. Gadda,
William Carlos Williams). In general the problem involves
the disputes about the culture of the elite, people’s culture,
culture of the masses, community culture and the antagonism
between “high” and “low”.
