GRAVITY-FREE ART
Mini-festival
March 23 – 28, 2004
Gravity-free Art is a mini-festival that brings together for several days a dozen of experimental works. Video installations, theatre and visual performances, still photography exhibitions, alternative video screenings on the boundary between fiction and documentary, dance experiments, “live” cinema, an ambient music festival will take place at various places in the city of Sofia. What unites these projects is their attempt to create new forms, the experimenting with the genres and the geography of the habitual cultural venues.
The map of the festival events outlines a vast territory from the city of Sofia: the Art Hostel, the Meeting Place Hall of the Sofia City Art Gallery, the ADS Gallery, the Close-up Discussion Club – Hambara, the new building of the Sfumato Theatre, the House of Cinema, an improvised exterior stage in Mladost 4 housing estate.
Several first time events will take place during the festival: the video installation Intuitive Evolution, the visual performance Martember, the still photography project Alice in Wonderland, the presentation of the dance projects Volk’s Mother II and Lili Handel and the open-air performance A Soldier. The project Night Ambient Festival is also within the frames of Gravity-free Art. It will feature the groups Bluba Lu, Nasekomiks, Ambient Anarchist, Navmemo, Elbi and BackPullver.
Some of the works have already had their incidental public presentation. They are not new but they had remained as comments or as memories in close professional circles and later were forgotten. Their presentation has left no after-effects. They have neither influence on art environment, nor followers. They were left by no interest or support by the state cultural institutions; they have not even had adequate media coverage.
The existence of such art in Bulgaria at present remains without support and context and that is why – without a future. This art occupies a space without any outlines – it is a gravity-free art.
One of the aims of the Red House Centre for Culture and Debate is, within a few days, to give this art a territory on which it can enter into dialogue with the audience and with itself. This is an attempt to create parallels, to exchange ideas and to seek for gravity powers – so necessary for every artistic process.
