HOW TO SAY IT

What?
How To Say It is a six day workshop for young professional screenwriters and producers from the Balkans and Central Europe. The workshop is organized by The Red House Centre for Culture and Debate (c/o Gulliver Clearing House Foundation) after an idea by Ivan Doykov and Mira Staleva.

When?
The workshop will be held from June 18th to June 23rd, 2007 at The Red House in Sofia, Bulgaria. The participants are from Balkan/Central European countries: Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Greece, Hungary, Poland, Romania and Slovakia.

The workshop has two modules:

Module 1 for screenwriters (June 18-23, 2007) – The Art of Cinema Storytelling: The International Principles of Cross-Over Success, led by Bobette Buster, Adj. Professor, University of Southern California’s George Lucas Graduate School of Cinema-Television, The Peter Stark Producing Programme, MFA. 1992 – 1999/2005
Content: Core concepts covered in the course: How to develop the “movie mind” of Industry professionals; “The big idea” – how to recognize a viable cinema idea; Understanding the “arc of transformation” inherent in all internationally successful films; The fundamentals of cinema language and grammar; The film industry business approach to cinema story development from the point-of-view of audience, marketing and distribution.

Module 2 for producers (June 21-23, 2007) – The Art of Film Producing, led by Pere Roca, Director of the Centre for Audiovisual Development (CDA), ICIC (Catalan Institute for the Cultural Industries) and bonus lectures by Maya Amsellem, lawyer, Capitol Films.
Content: 1. Day on development and screenwriting: Map of Development; Industrial premises; Development Budgets; A model for a reader's report; Tips on Structure; Characters and dialogues, etc. (by Pere Roca); 2. Day on legal aspects: Introduction to the basic contracts a producer has to secure during the development phase: Content and deal points. (by Maya Amsellem); 3. Day on company market orientation: Case study on Filmax Fantastic Factory (2000-2004): How a leading independent producer can emerge from a small genre films production company (by Pere Roca).
Bonus lectures: Sales agent – what is that and when to approach it? How to attract and attach a sales agent during the time you are developing your project? (by Maya Amsellem)
