Masoud Raouf, 50 min., Canada, 2002) screening and discussion with Babak Salari In 1992 a young Iranian student hanged himself from a tree on the outskirts of a small Ontario town. He had escaped the Ayatollahs' regime, but he could not escape his past. Filmmaker Masoud Raouf is also a part of the generation of Iranians who rose up against the Shah's despotic rule - only to be cruelly persecuted by an equally murderous new regime. The Tree that Remembers is his compassionate reflection on the betrayal of the 1979 Iranian revolution and the tenacity of the human spirit. Raouf assembles a group of Iranians - all former political prisoners like himself who were active in the democratic movement. All of them live now in Canada. The exceptional archive footage is blended with Raouf animated artwork to raise the emotional impact of the film. The screening will be followed by a meeting and discussion with BABAK SALARI, a famous Iranian photographer and political emigrant who has been living in Canada for the last 22 years. Due to the great interest this year the festival offers a new way for films’ evaluation. During 48 hours on June 7 and 8 (Saturday and Sunday) the viewers from Sofia are able to participate in the nomination of the films by themselves. 10 foreign and 10 Bulgarian films are to be nominated (no matter the category – fiction, documentary or animation) and the voting takes place on-site filling a special form. The body of a young Iraqi woman was found in her room in the Students' Town. Suham Raadi had emigrated due to political reasons and studied journalism in Bulgaria. The murderer has never been identified. Was Suham a victim of a greater sinister play? Sofia was the centre of the Iraqi secret services in the 1980s and the Soviet Block was supporting Saddam Hussein as “the Castro of the Middle East”. Shot in Tel Aviv, the film deals with people who, coming from ultraorthodox religious milieus, have decided to become secular. For the larger part of them, that choice is a synonym of breaking the ties with their families and a total denunciation by the community. Moreover, they have to adapt to a new society where they have to start learning everything. Poisoned (directors Hila & Peretz Markish, Israel, 31 minpresented by Student Film Forum) Zvi a young officer in the Israeli defense Force (IDF) and his girlfriend Khen are on their way to a “rave” in the desert. While walking through the desert they meet Krishna a hippie like guy, who is also on his way to the same party. The hallucinatory journey of these three characters brings out the stereotypes of young people in the current Israeli reality and deals with one of its most revered institution, the military service. November 6 (Tuesday) 2007, 6.30 p.m. Red hall Bulgaria’s Abandoned Children (documentary, BBC, 2007, 88', made by Kate Blewett) screening of the film followed by a debate on the institutional care for children with disabilities in Bulgaria. With the special participation of the BBC journalist and author of the documentary: Kate Blewett The documentary shocked the audience in the UK and frightened Bulgarian institutions. After the broadcasting on BBC the Movement of Bulgarian Mothers organized a petition for the closure of the home in Mogilino and made a demonstration in front of the Ministry of Labour and Social Policy asking the Minister to resign. Is there a chance that we discover Bulgaria’s children again? With the participation of people involved in the documentary and representatives of institutions, non-governmental organizations and human rights lawyers. The idea is to cross the points of views of the people involved in the making of the documentary (Kate Blewett), coalition of NGO’s (Slavka Kukova, BHC and Ivanka Shalapatova, “For Our Children” Foundation), Rossitza Bukova, Movement of the Bulgarian Mothers, Tzvetelina Iossifova, The Red House, Director and the state institutions who are responsible on decision making on the topic.
